MUTI

[ Pronounced MOO TEE ]

MUTI is a Zulu / Xhosa word, translating to “Tree.” More broadly across South Africa, it is used as slang reference to medicine in general.

Numuti is an intentional curation of South Africa Botanical flavors, some household names such as Rooibos, but Sceletium, our functional ingredient, is why we are different.

SCELETIUM

[ Pronounced Skuh-lee-tee-um ]

Sceletium [scientifically named Mesembryanthemum Tortuosum], is a succulent indigenous to South Africa. With its first known accounts in the 1600s, Sceletium was long thought to be South Africa’s variant of China’s “Ginseng,” thus sought after by the European and Asian Shipping Trades. It has a history of traditional use by native communities for its various thought benefits, including alertness, mood enhancement, and stress relief. It is said to have been used by South African hunter-gatherers ahead of long hunting trips.

Sceletium contains a psychoactive compound called Mesembrine, shown in 2015 in vitro study to exert antidepressant effects.

Sceletium is also known as:
Kanna, Channa, or Kougoed
